Folinic Acid vs. Folic Acid

Both are forms of vitamin B9, but they enter folate metabolism in different chemical forms.

Folinic acid and folic acid are both forms of vitamin B9, but they are not the same compound. The difference is more than spelling: they enter folate metabolism in different chemical states.

What is folic acid?

Folic acid is the fully oxidized monoglutamate form of folate. In the United States it is widely used to fortify enriched grain products, and it is common in multivitamins and prenatal supplements.

Folic acid has an especially important public-health role in pregnancy. The CDC and NIH continue to recommend folic acid for people who can become pregnant because folic acid is the form with evidence for reducing the risk of neural-tube defects. A different folate form should not be assumed to replace that recommendation.

What is folinic acid?

Folinic acid, also called 5-formyl-THF, is already a reduced folate. Unlike folic acid, it does not need to be reduced by the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase before entering the reduced-folate pool.

You will often see folinic acid supplied as calcium folinate. That is the ingredient form used by KIVELIX Folinic Acid Powder.

Does “reduced” mean “better”?

No. “Reduced” is a chemistry term, not a universal quality ranking. It tells you something about the molecule's oxidation state and metabolic pathway. It does not by itself establish that folinic acid will produce better health outcomes than folic acid for every person.

Likewise, it is too simplistic to say that folic acid is “bad” because it requires additional metabolic steps. Folic acid is the form used in the U.S. food-fortification program and is the form with established evidence for neural-tube-defect prevention.

The practical shopping question Are you looking for folic acid specifically, or has your clinician or personal supplement plan called for folinic acid? Choose based on the intended form, not on marketing phrases that imply every folate is interchangeable.

How KIVELIX is labeled

KIVELIX is a folinic acid product, not a folic-acid product. Each serving provides 1,000 mcg DFE folate, including 600 mcg folinic acid from calcium folinate. The only other ingredient is plant-derived potato starch.

Looking specifically for folinic acid?

KIVELIX Folinic Acid Powder provides 600 mcg folinic acid per serving from calcium folinate in an unflavored powder with one other ingredient: plant-derived potato starch. Each pouch contains 600 servings and includes a small 1/32 teaspoon serving scoop.

If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, taking medication, or using folate under medical supervision, ask your health care professional before changing folate forms.
