What Is Calcium Folinate?
Why folinic acid often appears on labels as calcium folinate, and how to read the amount correctly.
Calcium folinate is a calcium salt of folinic acid. If you see both names on a supplement label, they are usually describing the ingredient source and the folinic acid it provides rather than two separate active vitamins.
Why use a salt form?
Many nutrients and other ingredients are manufactured and formulated as salts. A salt pairs a molecule with an ion such as calcium, sodium, magnesium, or potassium. The resulting ingredient can have practical properties that make it suitable for manufacturing and formulation.
In the case of calcium folinate, the folinate portion corresponds to folinic acid, also known as 5-formyltetrahydrofolate. PubChem lists calcium as a component of the calcium folinate compound.
Is calcium folinate the same thing as calcium?
No. Calcium folinate contains calcium as part of the salt, but it is not primarily a calcium supplement. When a folate Supplement Facts panel lists a folate amount and identifies folinic acid from calcium folinate, the meaningful vitamin amount is the folate/folinic acid amount shown on the label.

- Folate: 1,000 mcg DFE per serving
- Folinic acid: 600 mcg per serving, from calcium folinate
- Other ingredient: plant-derived potato starch
The 600 mcg figure is the amount of folinic acid provided per labeled serving. It is not a statement that the serving contains 600 mcg of elemental calcium.
What does DFE mean?
DFE stands for Dietary Folate Equivalents. U.S. folate labels use DFE to express folate amounts in a way intended to account for differences in bioavailability among forms and food sources. The label can therefore show both a DFE amount for folate and a smaller numeric amount for the specific supplemental folate compound.
If those two numbers look different, it does not mean the label is contradictory. They are expressing the folate content using two different conventions.
Calcium folinate and prescription products
Calcium folinate also appears in pharmaceutical products. That does not make every calcium folinate product interchangeable. Prescription drugs and dietary supplements can differ in concentration, formulation, dose, manufacturing specifications, and intended use.
