What Is Folinic Acid?
A clear introduction to folinic acid, how it fits within the folate family, and what to look for on a supplement label.
Folinic acid is a form of folate, or vitamin B9. Chemically, it is known as 5-formyltetrahydrofolate (5-formyl-THF). It belongs to the same broad folate family as folic acid and 5-MTHF, often called methylfolate, but those names do not describe the same molecule.
That distinction matters when you are reading a supplement label. “Folate” is the umbrella nutrient term. “Folic acid,” “folinic acid,” and “methylfolate” identify particular forms of that nutrient.
Where folinic acid fits in the folate family
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements describes folate as a water-soluble B vitamin involved in one-carbon transfer reactions used in DNA and RNA synthesis and amino-acid metabolism. Different folate compounds can participate in the larger network of folate metabolism after they are processed in the body.
Folinic acid is a reduced folate. Folic acid, by contrast, is the fully oxidized form commonly used in fortified foods and many supplements. One practical biochemical difference is that folinic acid does not need the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) reduction step that folic acid uses before entering the reduced-folate pool.
Is folinic acid the same as folic acid?
No. The names sound similar, but folinic acid and folic acid are chemically different forms of vitamin B9. Folic acid is widely used in food fortification and supplements. Folinic acid is already in a reduced folate form.
That does not mean one form is automatically the best choice for every person. Folate needs, medication interactions, pregnancy considerations, and individual medical circumstances can change what form and amount are appropriate. If a clinician has recommended a specific folate form, follow that recommendation rather than substituting one form for another on your own.
Is folinic acid the same as methylfolate?
No. Methylfolate usually refers to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, or 5-MTHF. Folinic acid is 5-formyltetrahydrofolate. Both are reduced folates, but they carry different one-carbon groups and occupy different places in folate metabolism.
The NIH notes that 5-MTHF is the main folate form found in plasma. Folinic acid can be converted within the folate network to other reduced folate forms. For shoppers, the simplest takeaway is to read the ingredient line carefully instead of treating every “active folate” product as interchangeable.
Why does “calcium folinate” appear on labels?
Folinic acid is commonly supplied as a salt, such as calcium folinate. “Calcium folinate” identifies the ingredient form used to deliver folinic acid. On the KIVELIX label, each serving provides 1,000 mcg DFE folate, including 600 mcg folinic acid from calcium folinate.
The “600 mcg folinic acid” amount refers to the folinic acid supplied by the calcium folinate ingredient. It should not be read as 600 mcg of calcium.
What about the word “leucovorin”?
Folinic acid is also known as leucovorin in pharmaceutical and scientific contexts. However, a dietary supplement should not be treated as a substitute for a prescription drug. Prescription products can differ in formulation, dose, intended use, and medical supervision.
If your health care professional has discussed prescription leucovorin with you, ask them specifically what product and dose they intend rather than substituting a supplement.
