Folinic Acid vs. Methylfolate
How 5-formyl-THF and 5-MTHF differ, what they have in common, and why the names matter.
Folinic acid and methylfolate are both reduced forms of folate, but they are different molecules with different roles inside folate metabolism. A label that says “active folate” is not enough to tell you which one you are buying.

What is methylfolate?
Methylfolate usually means 5-MTHF. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements identifies 5-MTHF as the main form of folate in plasma and notes that it is also available in dietary supplements.
Methylfolate carries a methyl group and participates directly in the folate-dependent pathway that converts homocysteine to methionine. That is one reason it is frequently discussed in conversations about “methylation.”
What is folinic acid?
Folinic acid is 5-formyl-THF. It carries a formyl group rather than a methyl group. It can enter the network of reduced folates without first undergoing the DHFR reduction required by folic acid.
Because folate metabolism is a network, folinic acid is not simply “methylfolate one step earlier” or a generic substitute for 5-MTHF. The two forms participate differently and can be converted through different enzymatic reactions.
Which one is more “active”?
Marketing language can make this confusing. Both folinic acid and 5-MTHF are reduced folate forms. Calling one “active” does not make the other inactive, and the word alone does not establish which form is appropriate for a particular person.
Likewise, neither form should be presented as universally superior. Research questions about folate forms can be specific to the population, dose, endpoint, and medical context being studied.
Why someone might choose a folinic acid product
The most straightforward reason is simply that they are specifically looking for folinic acid rather than folic acid or methylfolate. In that case, a clearly labeled single-folate product makes it easier to know which form is being used.
